Job Description

Summary National Archives and Records Administration, Digitization Division. Responsible for protecting records, ensuring proper storage, conservation, reproduction, applying restrictions, and creating descriptive products to enable discovery and use of records. Duties As an Archivist at GS-12 level, duties include: Coordinate digitization efforts of archival holdings for public access and permanent retention following NARA guidance and procedures. Prepare records for digitization, assessing and preparing textual and microform holdings. Identify, capture, and document metadata, interpreting descriptive standards and assisting others. Perform quality control of digital surrogates and prepare them for upload to approved storage and the National Archives Catalog. Collaborate with preservation and conservation staff to establish priorities and recommend appropriate treatment solutions according to guidelines. Requirements Conditions of employment include: Probationary or trial period may be required; continued employment contingent on supervisory certification at least 30 days before period end. Must successfully complete background investigation and Declaration for Federal Employment. Must register with Selective Service if male born after December 31 1959 or be exempt. Complete Personal Identity Verification (PIV) per Form i‑9. Physical demands include climbing ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, handling boxes up to 15 feet high and typically weighing 50 pounds. Work environment involves office, warehouse, storage, and research rooms; requires safety precautions and handling of aged records. Must be U.S. Citizen or U.S. National; Public Trust background investigation required. Qualifications Specialized Experience and Education for GS‑9 level (one year, GS‑7). Experience researching and reporting on archival records. Reading, interpreting and explaining policies, manuals, procedures, and statutes. Performing archival functions: monitoring, researching, or managing documents. OR Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or equivalent. OR Combination of experience and education beyond first degree year credit. Specialized Experience and Education for GS‑7 level (one year, GS‑5). Reading and interpreting policies, procedures, and manuals. Communicating and assisting various audiences. Performing archival functions. OR One year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement. OR Combination of experience and education beyond bachelor’s degree. Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in archival science or related major with specific semester hours, or combination of education and experience with at least 30 semester hours as specified. Time‑In‑Grade: GS‑09: At least 52 weeks at GS‑07. GS‑07: At least 52 weeks at GS‑05. Current federal employees: at least three months in current appointment.
